  4.     Colombia's Banco de Occidente has no U.S. branches, but its
  5. Panamanian subsidiary did a booming underground business in
  6. America. The Panama bank is expected to plead guilty in Atlanta
  7. federal court this week to charges that it laundered hundreds
  8. of millions of dollars in drug profits for Colombia's Medellin
  9. cocaine cartel. The bank allegedly collected the illicit money
  10. in New York bank accounts, from which money was wired
  11. electronically to Europe and Latin America.

  13.     As part of the plea agreement, the Panamanian bank could
  14. pay a $5 million fine, giving up most of its $6.7 million net
  15. worth. The fine would be the largest U.S. penalty ever paid by
  16. a bank on money-laundering charges and would be the first time
  17. a foreign bank with no formal operations in the U.S. has been
  18. convicted of such violations.
